Reproductive system injury compensation claims

When it comes to the reproductive system it is perhaps one area of our body which we focus on keeping in great condition, as one day having children may be an option.

Fertility and the choice as to whether to start or increase the size of your family is a fundamental human right. But, what if that right is taken away from you due to the negligence of another? In such circumstances, you may have a personal injury claim.

The reproductive system

The male reproductive system consists of two major parts – the testes where sperm are produced and the penis.

Male genital injuries can occur fairly easily since the scrotum and penis are not protected by bones. It is possible to sustain a fracture to the penis but this is rarely as a result of an accident as fracture occurs when an abnormal force is applied to the erect penis.

The female reproductive system is a little more complex and consists of the vagina, clitoris, labia, cervix, uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes.

Accident circumstances that may lead to an injury to the reproductive system

Genital injuries most commonly occur as a result of:

  1. sporting activities, for example a reckless tackle
  2. work related tasks, for example heavy lifting
  3. falling onto a sharp or cutting object
  4. a road traffic accident, for example when riding a cycle or motorbike
  5. exposure to irritating chemicals.

An accident can result in infertility and in males this is defined as producing no or too few sperm cells. In women, infertility is defined as a disorder of the reproductive system that hinders the body’s ability to ovulate, conceive or carry an infant to term.
