Facelift (rhytidectomy) surgery compensation claims
A ‘facelift’, known medically as a rhytidectomy, is an elective, cosmetic procedure performed under general anaesthetic, which has the overall outcome of trying to lift and tighten the face to provide a more youthful look.
Facelift operations themselves are relatively complex and can exert huge trauma on the face as the aim is to remove fat and tighten muscles. The face is then stitched into its new position when the desired result has been achieved by the surgeon.
The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons has noted a steady increase in these sorts of operations, in men as well as in women.
This demand for elective cosmetic surgery has meant that some unscrupulous surgeons are trying to carry out these operations without the required care and attention, in the hope of making some quick money.
The most common complications and post-operative complaints following negligent treatment from patients relate to:
- unnecessary scarring
- blood clots
- loss of skin or hair
- damage to facial nerves
- developing pockets of blood under the skin.
Complications from facelifts can also lead to the patient being heavily out-of-pocket as they then have to book more surgery in order to fix their appearance, which can result in a longer time off work and potentially a longer stay in hospital.
If a facelift is performed negligently, it can also leave patients with a long-lasting psychological injury.
Surgeons are also placed under a heavy duty to inform patients of the risks of this sort of surgery prior to going ‘under the knife’. As with any surgery, there are always risks, and it is the surgeon’s job to make sure the patient understands the procedure and the potential risks, before proceeding with an operation that can have potentially traumatic after effects if not performed properly. Failure to advise a patient of the risks is referred to as a lack of informed consent.
